IQNA – The Imam Reza (AS) Holy Shrine has announced that 1,200 worshippers will be selected by a draw to take part in the I’tikaf ritual in the holy month of Rajab.

Itikaf at Imam Reza Shrine

Itikaf, in the Islamic faith, is a particularly commended pious practice consisting of a period of retreat in a mosque for a certain number of days in accordance with the believer’s own wish.

Those taking part in the spiritual ritual sit in mosques and fast and pray the Almighty God during the three days of Itikaf (usually on the 13th, 14th and 15th of Rajab).

According to Amin Behnam, an official with Imam Reza (AS) shrine, the registration process started on December 5 and will continue until December 15.

Those who are interested can register online at "etekaf.razavi.ir" or by sending the number 8 in a text message to 500048030.

Behnam said that the draw will be held on December 22 and the results will be sent to the participants by text messages on December 26.

He added that 10% of the slots will be reserved for foreign nationals, who can also register through the same methods. Last year, 89 foreigners joined the I’tikaf at the holy shrine.

He said that the only group that is excluded from the ritual is children who have not reached the age of religious duty.

The I’tikaf ceremonies will take place in the underground space of Goharshad Mosque, a historic mosque adjacent to the holy shrine, from February 24 to 26.

The mosque can accommodate hundreds of worshippers and provide them with a warm and comfortable environment in the cold weather.

The I’tikaf ritual is a tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his family, and is considered a highly rewarding act of worship in Islam.
