LONDON (IQNA) – Thousands of Muslims took to the streets of London on Friday to attend a march that commemorate Imam Hussein (AS) and his sacrifices.

Muslims in the British capital of London have performed mourning rituals to mark Ashura, the day when Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad [PBUH] and the third Shia Imam, was martyred some 14 centuries ago.

Ashura, which falls on the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is a day of fasting, prayer and mourning for many Muslims, especially for the Shia sect. It is also known as Youm-e-Ashura in the Arabic world.

In London, Shia Muslims formed processions to express their grief and pay tributes to the martyrs of Karbala. They chanted ‘Ya Hussain’ and beat their chests as a sign of devotion.

Participants also condemned the recent acts of Quran desecration in Sweden and Denmark.

Ashura is an important observance for Muslims in London, as well as in other parts of the UK and around the world. It is a day to remember the sacrifices made by Imam Hussein (AS) and his followers, who stood up for justice and truth against tyranny and oppression.
