Mehmet Gormez, the former head of the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) said this in a meeting in Qatar with Ali al-Qaradaghi, the secretary-general of the International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS).
He added that the academic center will be founded based on Islamic principles and values, the IUMS website reported.
Gormez said when Mehmed II, commonly known as Mehmed the Conqueror, conquered Istanbul in the 15th century, he invited Muslim scholars to the city and now Istanbul is going to become a center of gathering of scholars again.
During the meeting, al-Qaradaghi and Gormez, who is visiting Qatar at the invitation of the Islamic Teachings Faculty of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), discussed issues like the recent presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey.
During his stay in Doha, Gormez also delivered a speech at the HBKU about future Muslim scholars.
