Matar Taris is known in the North African country as a Quranic village.
According to Akhbar al-Yawm website, with a total population of nearly 60,000, it has some 20,000 memorizers of the Holy Book.
There are children as young as 9 and old men and women aged more than 70 among the Quran memorizers of the village.
It has numerous Quran memorization classes, including 13 for kids and 11 for women.
Currently, some 3,000 school students, both girls and boys, are taking courses in the village to learn the Quran by heart.
Many Quran activists from Matar Taris have attended local, national and international Quran competitions in recent years, some winning various top titles.
Among them are Salah Ahmed Issa and Hussein Abdul Ghaffar who have competed in international Quranic events and won a couple of top ranks.
